Within the framework of SIL Barcelona, the national reference fair on logistics, PEFC, the Association that promotes forest sustainability, organized a session on “Sustainability and innovation for the decarbonisation of transport, logistics and distribution supply chains”, as part of the “Knowledge” program.

Speakers were Ana Isabel González Herrera, President of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Logistics Center, Ricardo Ortego Robles, CEO of ROR Logistics Operator, Ana Palencia, Director of Communication and Sustainable Business of Unilever Spain, Alex Munujos, Director of Sustainability and Public Relations of Brico Depôt, and Ana Belén Noriega, General Secretary of PEFC Spain as moderator. During the session, different initiatives and solutions were announced to minimize the impact of supply chains in response to the Net Zero objectives of the European Union.

Ana Belén Noriega, led the session and explained the relationship between PEFC and logistics and distribution chains. “The forestry sector needs efficient logistics since its products are found in remote places, the forests. In addition, PEFC promotes value chains of sustainable forest origin through certification; the demand for PEFC products distinguishes sustainable practices based on the use of natural materials such as paper, cardboard, pallets or rubber for wheels, necessary for the logistics sector, encouraging them to come from forests with sustainable forest management”.

In this sense, Alex Munujos presented the four pillars of sustainability Brico Depot’s CSR: planet, with a commitment to reduce emissions and a commitment to the consumption of renewable energy and wood products by up to 40%; customers, integrating sustainability criteria that minimize the consumer’s carbon footprint; communities, working on social aspects at their points of sale; and integration, including diversity across the board.

Ana Palencia presented, the Unilever sustainability goals, among which the 100% reduction of carbon emissions by 2030 and the value chains of consumed products stand out, for example, using megatracks, prioritizing train transport since it reduces emissions by 3 to 5 times and promoting the centralization of products for optimal deliveries and less environmental impact. He stressed that the most important thing is transparency with the results of the objectives to achieve credibility and to be able to improve based on the data of each little progress.

Ana Isabel González Herrera explained the challenges of the logistics sector, such as the 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions or the Low Emissions Law for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, with its consequent regulation in the supply chain and the municipal administrative complexity, which they entail. These regulations imply restrictions for companies in the supply chain that fail to meet these objectives, although aid is provided to promote their achievement, increasing the competitiveness of companies that achieve it, because “sustainability means better market positioning“, he pointed.

Lastly, Ricardo Ortego influenced the process of education and awareness of the human capital of ROR Operador Logístico to implement sustainability and innovation in the supply chain, as well as waste management, the circular economy and the use of green energy. Commitment and passion define the DNA of ROR, a family business with more than 100 years of history.

All these initiatives are built aligning with future needs in which planning with respect to demand, data management, awareness of the entire value chain, internal communication and towards society and accessibility will be essential so that can be implemented.
