Amnesty International (AI) asked the Organization of American States to urgently discuss the growing repression in the Americas at the organization’s next assembly, to be held this week.

The body published an open letter in which it asks foreign ministers and political leaders to pay attention to the “closure” of civic space in the region with an increase in the number of citizens who face repression for expressing their positions.

The director for the Americas of Amnesty International, Erika Guevara Rosas, considered that “the region cannot continue on the path of repression of protests, the militarization of borders and citizen security, the destruction of the environment and the lack of protection of historically marginalized communities, such as Indigenous Peoples, and human rights defenders”.

“The heads of state of the Americas have to change course and seek solutions to create a freer and more secure continent, with full respect for the human rights of all people,” he stressed.

Amnesty International is concerned about the excessive use of force to suppress social protests, primarily as is occurring in Peru.
