Thibaut Courtois unleashed a storm within the Red Devils and beyond on Sunday evening by no longer showing up in Tubize for today’s European Championship qualifier against Estonia. According to national coach Domenico Tedesco, the goalkeeper felt “disappointed and insulted” because not he, but Romelu Lukaku was allowed to wear the captain’s armband against Austria in the absence of captain Kevin De Bruyne.
A claim that Courtois makes chicken cap in a statement on his social media. The goalkeeper resolutely contradicts the words of his national coach. “I was surprised that the coach gave a partial and subjective version of a private conversation at his press conference. It is the first time that a trainer decides to make such a conversation public. I am deeply disappointed and want to make it clear that the words of the coach do not correspond to reality.”
Courtois indicates that he had a conversation with Tedesco and Lukaku about the captain’s armband. “I insist that I have not demanded anything under any circumstances. Being captain of the national team is not a whim or an arbitrary decision. It has to be the coach’s decision and I tried to tell him that. Unfortunately, I failed to do that.”

The Real Madrid goalkeeper finally cites a latent right knee injury as the reason for his departure. An explanation that father Thierry Courtois already gave and that fiancée Mishel Gerzig reinforces on Instagram with a photo of Courtois’s taped right knee. “The strongest person I know. I’m proud of you,” she wrote. A little later, another message followed on Instagram with support for her future husband.

Don’t talk about injury
However, Tedesco denied at his press conference that he ever discussed an injury with his goalkeeper.

He has an inflammation in the knee, with which he has been playing for a while. But the discussion with Tedesco was indeed about the captain’s armband.

“In that conversation I asked him, not for his own benefit, to explain and make decisions to avoid situations that have harmed us in the past, for the benefit of the group. To be captain of the national team is not a fad or an arbitrary decision. It must be his decision and I tried to tell him that. Unfortunately, I failed to do that.”
“I insist that I have not demanded anything under any circumstances and that I have spoken with Romelu Lukaku to clarify all the circumstances surrounding this situation. I also want to make it clear that I have not had any conversations about this subject with other teammates, as claimed.”
“Yesterday afternoon I underwent a check up on my right knee. The medical staff of Real Madrid and the Red Devils were in contact and decided to let me leave the camp.”
