The fight against hunger and the search for peace in Ukraine will be among the topics that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will discuss in an audience with Pope Francis and then in Paris with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.
Lula will arrive in Rome this Tuesday, at the beginning of a trip that will also take him to Pariswhere he will attend the “Summit for a new global financial pact”, called by the French president.
The director of the European Department of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, María Luisa Escorel, explained in a press conference that Lula’s official agenda in Rome will begin on Wednesday, when will be received by the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella.
In this first commitment, the “intense bilateral relationship” will be discussed, as well as the state of the negotiations for a trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, of which Italy is a “great enthusiast,” said the diplomat.
Lula will then go to the Vatican, where on Wednesday he will be received by Pope Francis, with whom, according to Escorel, he has “much convergence of ideas in relation to social and environmental issueson the fight against hunger and the defense of human rights”.
Likewise, the Brazilian president will present to the Bishop of Rome his initiatives for the search for peace in Ukraine, until now not well received by the Western powers and which aim at the creation of a group of countries that can mediate and carry out Kiev and Moscow to a negotiating table.
After the visit to the Pope, Lula will meet with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, a former friend who even visited him in 2018when the current Brazilian president was imprisoned due to corruption trials later annulled by the Justice.
On Wednesday, Lula will travel to Paris, where that same day he will have a bilateral meeting with the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and with organizers of the next United Nations Summit Conference on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held at later this year in the United Arab Emirates.
The next day he will join the work of the summit called by Macron, who will try to pave the way towards a new global financial pact that favors cooperation, the fight for the climate, restores north-south trust and help achieve the goals proposed by the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda.
On Friday, Lula will have a private lunch with Macron, to whom, according to Escorel, he will reiterate his invitation to participate in the Amazon summit that Brazil has convened for next August in the city of Belém.
Likewise, in the meeting with Macron, The negotiations for the EU-Mercosur agreement and Lula’s initiative to search for peace in Ukraine will be on the tablehitherto resisted by France and other Western powers.
In relation to the EU-Mercosur agreement, Lula himself anticipated this Monday that he will reiterate to Macron his country’s rejection of the new environmental demands that the community bloc has raised.
