The population of Germany in 2022 grew by 1.3 percent or 1.1 million people. This was reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. According to new data, by the end of last year, 84.4 million people lived in Germany: about 72 million Germans and 12.3 million people with foreign citizenship.
Experts attribute the increase in the population of Germany to the growth in the number of migrants: in 2022, almost 1.5 million people came to the country – more than four times more than in 2021. The majority of those who arrived are citizens of Ukraine. Of the 12.3 million foreigners living in Germany, the maximum number of Turkish citizens is 1.34 million. In second place are the citizens of Ukraine – 1.05 million people: since the beginning of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the number of Ukrainians living in Germany has increased six times. In third place are the citizens of Syria: 883 thousand people
Foreigners younger than natives
The share of foreigners in the total population increased from 13.1 to 14.6 percent. While the number of people with foreign citizenship has increased significantly, the number of German citizens has decreased by 0.4 percent. In 2022, the number of deaths in the country exceeded the number of births by 327,000. In 2021, this figure was 228 thousand. Experts attribute these figures to the coronavirus pandemic.
The age structure of people with foreign citizenship differs significantly from native Germans. 18.6 percent of the local population is under 20 years of age. People aged 20 to 59 make up 49 percent. 32.4 percent of Germans are over 59 years old.
Among foreigners living in Germany, 20.2 percent are under 20 years old, people aged 20 to 59 years old – 67.4 percent, and people over 59 years old – 12.4 percent. As a result, the average age of the German population decreased slightly and reached 44.6 years.
The population in the west of the country is growing faster
In the West German federal states, the population increased by 913 thousand people (1.4 percent) and reached 68 million. In the states of eastern Germany, the population increased by 131,000 people (1.1 percent) to 12.6 million at the end of 2022.
