385,000 cyberattacks against French organizations were successful last year, according to a statistical evaluation.

The number of successful cyberattacks against public and private organizations in France reached 385,000 in 2022 for a total cost of 2 billion euros, according to a statistical evaluation by the Asterès firm published on Tuesday. This total is divided into 887 million euros in direct costs (loss of productivity, increase in production costs), 888 million euros in ransoms and 7 million euros in lost working hours.

For these figures, Asterès has compiled a series of studies on the number and average cost of cyberattacks, supplemented by a survey of members of the Club of IT infrastructure, technology and production managers (CRiP). Around 43% of organizations have been victims of at least one successful cyberattack in a year, according to a Forrester study for insurer Hiscox. And on average 4.3 cyberattacks succeed per year, according to a study by OpinionWay with 328 French organizations. Asterès deduces the figure of 385,000 successful cyberattacks against French organizations in 2022.

347,000 successful cyberattacks affecting companies

In 2022, 831 attacks were brought to the attention of Anssi, the state IT security agency, or only 0.2% of the estimated total, notes Asterès. Among the 347,000 successful cyberattacks affecting companies, 330,000 concern SMEs and 17,000 medium and large companies. In addition, 37,000 successful cyberattacks targeted public organizations, or 10% of the total, Asterès calculates. The average direct cost of a successful cyberattack in France is estimated at 25,600 euros excluding ransom and 64,000 euros for a large company. Added to this is the cost of the ransom, on average 25,700 euros per successful attack. But this statistical average hides considerable disparities, underlines Asterès, who recalls that the average amount of a ransom for a private company amounts to 250,000 euros according to the CoveWare firm. Asterès weighted this figure by the probability that a company would pay a ransom.
