The blue economy comes to the Port of Barcelona with the opening of the headquarters of the World Ocean Council

The blue economy continue its implementation in Barcelona. To the undeniable repercussion that the Sailing America’s Cuphas been added this Tuesday the opening of the headquarters of the World Ocean Council (WOC) at the World Trade Center (WTC). The president of the Port of Barcelona, Lluís Salvadóhas handed over the keys to the offices to its president and CEO, Paul Holthus.

The WOC is the leading international business organization which aims to promote sustainable maritime economy, addressing the transversal problems that affect the oceans, especially in terms of environmental sustainability. Its mission is to involve and bring together leaders of all maritime industriessuch as shipping, fishing, oil and gas, aquaculture, tourism, renewable energy or the ports.

A “very powerful” organization

The Director of Innovation and Business Strategy of the port, Emma Coboshas explained that the WOC is a “very powerful business organization” of companies looking for investment opportunities in blue economy. For his part, Holthus stressed that the space ceded by the port institution becomes the first physical offices of the organization, which until now worked remotely.

The person in charge has assured that Barcelona is “the global ‘hub’ of the blue economy” and that the objective was to bring investment organizations in this sector to the city. For his part, Salvadó wanted to underline that the implementation of the WOC responds to the “extensive collaboration” between the port and the Barcelona City Council and he predicted that, if it is maintained, it will bear more fruit.
