After the radiators at 19°C, make way for air conditioning at 26°C. After “I lower, I turn off, I shift », voilà “we act, we reduce”. The Ministry of Energy Transition announced on Tuesday, June 20, “act 2” of its sobriety plan as well as a communication campaign to make the French aware of a new series of eco-gestures adapted to the summer season.

In October 2022, “act 1” was launched to avoid power cuts during the winter. The challenge has been met: excluding the weather effect, households, businesses and communities have reduced their combined gas and electricity consumption by more than 12% between August 2022 and June 2023 and the energy system has held up. Eight months later, it is no longer a question of dealing with a one-off crisis. “The challenge is to install sobriety over time and throughout the year, to lower bills, but also our greenhouse gas emissions, details the cabinet of Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher. It is essential to get out of fossil fuels. »

Among the main recommendations, the most cross-cutting concerns the air conditioning temperature: as already provided by law, it should not be set below 26°C in all buildings. At the same time, mayors are called upon to enforce the decree adopted at the end of 2022 which provides that businesses close their doors when the air conditioning is on..

Drive at 110 km/h rather than 130 km/h

Called upon to lead by example, CAC 40 companies undertake to adopt quantified targets for reducing their energy consumption, which must be made public. Thirty of them should also encourage their employees to drive at 110 km/h on the highway rather than 130 km/h – as the State already does –, which makes it possible to reduce emissions by 20%. greenhouse gases and fuel consumption. Motorway companies and the communication campaign will also call for “take it easy and carpool”. A vague message, regrets Hélène Gassin, the president of the négaWatt association, who would have preferred a clear and general call to drive at 110 km / h.

On the other hand, it considers that the reinforcement, from 2024, of the penalty on the most emitting and heaviest vehicles could have a significant impact. “It is absolutely necessary to take into account the weight of cars, including electric ones, when 40% of vehicles sold are SUVs”she points out.
