Dr. Ekaterina Matiskina, a Russian nutritionist and a member of the Russian Association of Nutritionists, announced that the components of “moon milk” help in falling asleep quickly.

In an interview with “Sputnik” radio, the expert indicated that there are different recipes for “moon milk” that are circulated on social media, and all of them confirm that it helps fight insomnia and improve sleep quality, and that it is an ancient innovation of Indian doctors. The most famous recipe in Russia consists of warm milk, honey and cinnamon, and it is advised to add additional ingredients to change the taste, aroma, color and appearance of the drink.

The expert explains that warm milk itself has soothing properties, so eating it at night helps with rapid sleep.

She says: “The basis of the ‘moon milk’ drink is warm milk, as the proteins in it can contribute to relaxation and calmness. Eating protein before bed is also beneficial because it contributes to the regeneration processes that occur in the body during sleep.”

The expert points out that the amount of honey should not exceed one teaspoon.

She says, “The honey used in the ‘moon milk’ recipe contains glucose and fructose. Glucose provides energy, and for some it may be a stimulant rather than a sedative. But if a teaspoon of honey is added, the nervous system will not be stimulated.”

And to enhance the calming effect of the drink, different spices and herbs can be added.

She explains: “Cinnamon is said to have a calming effect, but I haven’t heard of that. So adding mint or chamomile to the drink is even better. To increase the calming effect, lavender extract can be used.

She adds: “This drink is not recommended for diabetics or those who are trying to lose weight. Generally, other people who do not face specific health problems can take ‘moon milk’ two to three times a week.

Moon milk is a drink popular in Russia for its purported ability to improve sleep and provide relaxation. However, individuals who have any health issues or are concerned about its effect on their health should consult a physician before taking it on a regular basis.
