In a recent report by the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), it was revealed that Senegal is among the eight countries out of the sixteen selected where more than one million people are facing a food crisis. According to this 2023 regional report on food crises in the Sahel region and West Africa, the situation is particularly alarming for 1.3 million Senegalese, which represents 7.1% of the population, who find themselves in a crisis situation or in an even more critical situation.

The analysis carried out by CILSS indicates that between March and May 2023, 680,000 people, or 3.8% of the population studied, were already in a crisis situation or worse. However, projections for the period from June to August 2023 are even more worrying, with 1.3 million Senegalese, or 7.1% of the population, who will be in a food crisis or in an even more serious situation.

Among the most affected regions are Matam and Louga, where the prevalence of acute malnutrition in children under 5 is increasing. According to the report, the rates exceed the emergency threshold by 15%, reaching 28% in Louga and 23% in Matam. This worrying situation was highlighted in the document taken up by the newspaper “Les Echos”.

The report also highlights the average positive impact of food availability on people’s food consumption and livelihoods during the current period (March to May).

The food crisis in the Sahel continues to threaten the food security of millions of people, jeopardizing the health and well-being of many Senegalese. Urgent measures must be taken to respond to this critical situation and to provide adequate food assistance to those affected. The mobilization of national and international resources as well as the coordination between the different actors are essential to mitigate the devastating effects of this crisis and ensure a more stable and secure future for the populations of the Sahel.
