In the third friendly after the 2022 World Cup, the Brazilian team suffered its second defeat. This Tuesday, the team lost to Senegal, by 4-2, at the José Alvalade stadium, in Lisbon, in another match with actions against racism. It was the first time that Brazil conceded more than three goals in a game since the 7-1 defeat by Germany in the 2014 World Cup.

With poor performance, defensive errors and a disorganized team on the field, the team led by interim Ramon Menezes continues to wait for coach Carlo Ancelotti. Real Madrid’s Italian coach should take over at the CBF only next year.

With the support of the Brazilian public in Portugal, Brazil opened the scoring in the 10th minute, with a header by Lucas Paquetá, after a cross by Vinícius Júnior. Even before the break, Senegal equalized with a beautiful shot from Diallo.

At the beginning of the second half, the African team turned around with an own goal by Marquinhos, who tried to cut a header by Sarr in a good move by Mané. At 9 minutes, Mané hit the angle, scored a goal and extended for the Senegalese. Soon after, Marquinhos cashed in a weird finish that covered up the goalkeeper.

Brazil still tried to press for a draw, but was unsuccessful. The players even asked for a penalty in a hand touch after Rony’s header. In addition, in a counterattack, Jackson was brought down by goalkeeper Ederson in the area. Mané took the penalty and set Senegal’s victory: 4 to 2.

Waiting for Ancelotti

After the match, Ederson was asked if the uncertainty about the new coach is disturbing the team’s focus. “No, on the contrary, that is out of the question. Having to admit that it wasn’t a good game. The team was a little passive, the team needed to be more aggressive. And Senegal is to be congratulated for the result, because they arrived hard, they arrived firmly, that’s what we needed. We had the ball at our feet, but we weren’t very aggressive. And the result was what it was”, said the Manchester City goalkeeper.

Ramon Menezes, who coaches the under-20 team, explained that he still doesn’t know if he will temporarily remain in charge of the main team. CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues is expected to announce in the coming weeks the planning for an interim technical commission until Ancelotti arrives.

“Now, at this moment, I stop to rest. I will wait for the president to contact me, to sit down, to talk, to see my position within the CBF and always with the aim of helping. I think that’s part of my personality, which is courage. I’m here to help the Brazilian team. Whenever the president needs it, I will be available”, said Ramon.

The Brazilian team will play again in September, for the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, against Bolivia and Peru.
