Patricia Paay’s health is not going well. A bacterial infection damaged the prosthesis in her hip, forcing her to stay in a care hotel for three months. Patricia is still in severe pain and has to go to the hospital again this week for an examination. “I hope for a miracle.”

Shortly after Patricia had a hip replacement, she broke her upper leg in a fall in her home. She was soon able to walk again, until a bacterial infection threw a spanner in the works. She spent more than three months in a care hotel. “I am no longer the person I once was. And I will never be the same again,” said Patricia at the time.

Back to the hospital

Patricia still suffers from severe pains. However, she has now regained some hope. “This week I have an examination in the hospital,” she says in conversation with the weekly magazine Story. “They want to give me an injection, a kind of epidural.”

‘Then it stops’

The injection could make the pain more bearable or even disappear. Still, Patricia doesn’t want to go too fast. She has been in the hospital so many times lately and is fed up with it. “On the one hand you hope for a miracle, but there is nothing they have found yet that will ease the pain,” she explains. “But then I hear that they may have found a cure after all. And then you go again. But if this doesn’t help, it really stops.”

Holidays

Patricia and her husband Robbert recently enjoyed a mini vacation in Belgium. “We drove to the coast with our dog. With this beautiful weather you don’t have to go that far for the real holiday feeling,” Patricia explains. A flight vacation was not an option. “Then I have to stand in line for too long. That can only be sustained behind a rollator. And I would rather not.”
