44.6% of Catalan economists who have participated in a survey carried out by the College of Economists of Catalonia (CEC) on the current economic situation believe that the situation in the community it’s better than a year agowhile 32% believe that it is the same and 21%, that it is worse.

The Survey on the Economic Situation of the CEC, presented this Wednesday by its dean, Carles Puig de Travyhas had the participation of 617 members of the school who answered the questionnaire between May 25 and June 16 of this year.

The study shows that 44.6% of the economists surveyed believe that the economic situation in Catalonia is better than it was a year ago, which means an increase in this index compared to the previous surveyr, from winter 2023 (carried out in February and March), when only 34% thought that the situation was better than in the previous year.

32.6% believe that the situation is the same as a year ago (31.7% thought so in winter) and 21.4% think that the current situation is worse than in the summer of 2022.

As for the optimism index -a score from 0 to 10 that economists place on the economic situation-, those surveyed give Catalonia a 5.36 and Spain a 5.17, both being higher than the scores in the same survey. put in winter: 5.14 and 4.99 respectively.

pre-pandemic levels

This optimism index, above 5, shows a return to pre-pandemic levels: 5.04 (June 2016), 5.59 (June 2017) or 5.53 (June 2018) were the scores that the CEC economists placed to the Catalan economy at the time.

Regarding the main problems of the Catalan economy, the inflation continues to be the most voted for by respondents with 64% (in winter it registered 62%), followed by fiscal deficit with the State (44%) and infrastructures and communications (34%).

In any case, although most economists point to inflation as the main problem, the same respondents have lowered the level of concern about rising prices: in the CEC survey of the economic situation a year ago (summer 2022) 47% of economists said that their degree of concern about the issue was “very concerned”, while in the same survey published now that figure drops to 20.3%. 74% of those surveyed, in any case, continue to consider themselves “worried” about the increase in prices.

One problem that did not appear in the winter survey and that enters the list strongly is the droughtwhich 32% of the economists surveyed see as a main problem in Catalonia.

The conflict that loses the most importance compared to the previous survey is the ukrainian war: In the winter survey, 28.3% indicated it as a main problem and in the survey published this Wednesday, only 16% did so.

interest rates

Another issue that the CEC has conveyed to its members is the policy carried out by the European Central Bank (ECB) in recent months to raise interest rates: 55% believe that it is a mistake and 38% consider it a correct (6% did not give an answer).
