A Scottish man named Matthew Hicks thought he had a cold, so he took fever-reducing tablets and painkillers, and went to the hospital after his health deteriorated. Only to discover that he has sepsis, a serious condition in which the body does not respond to infection properly, which led to the blood stopping reaching his feet, so doctors had to amputate his legs.

In detail, Matthew Hicks took some medications when he developed a high fever in March of this year, and after his health deteriorated, his wife Rachel called for an ambulance that took him to the hospital, where doctors discovered that he had sepsis, streptococcus A, and pneumonia in the right lobe of the lung.

Immediately, doctors rushed to put Matthew in care when his organs began to stop performing their functions to save his life, and after he woke up from a coma after two weeks, the doctors told him that the blood was no longer reaching his feet and that they needed to amputate his legs below the knee.

Hicks’ wife revealed the chapters of her family ordeal, saying: “He was taken straight to the intensive care unit and I was told he was in a critical condition,” expressing her surprise and annoyance, especially that her husband was “usually fit and healthy.”

She explained that he was only complaining of a bad cold and a high temperature and was feeling some improvement thanks to the paracetamol tablets, so they both thought he was fine.

“The attending physician was painfully honest,” he said, telling the family that if the ECMO device the doctors used to keep him alive didn’t help stabilize Hicks’ organs, he would have no other options.

She indicated that when she and the rest of the family heard this, a state of silence and disbelief applied to them, but they felt very relieved when they were told that Hicks had succeeded in overcoming the danger stage, and then they received more bad news about the amputation of his legs.
