The central promenade of Parque del Gasset has hosted this Wednesday the activity ‘Science in the street’, promoted by the Association of Cultural and Scientific Industries and framed within the Casa de la Ciencia de Ciudad Real project with which the closure of the school year 2022-23.

‘Science on the street’ is an activity that aims to bring scientific knowledge closer to the little ones in an informative way, highlighting research and the promotion of scientific professions.

This workshop, explains the coordinator of the activity, Ángel Serrano, “began as an experience a few years ago and was a general movement of all the people of the University, with whom we asked that there be a permanent space in Ciudad Real, which was the old library, next to the Prado Gardens».

This movement of ‘La Casa de la Ciencia’ ended up emerging from that, with which science has been brought to the streets to involve the population of Ciudad Real. «At the University, in our companies, there is a level
of absolutely spectacular science and that in many cases is very, very, very unknown. That is why we are committed to carrying out these activities”, which at the beginning were carried out in the Plaza Mayor and which ended up being moved to the Gasset for a matter of space and which has been vital so that this end-of-year meeting has not stopped grow in recent editions.

Throughout the year, Ciudad Real does not stop promoting science and its professionals through various initiatives, this interest has an impact on the interest that is growing among the youngest, who are increasingly committed to scientific and technological careers to the detriment of the humanities. “A couple of days ago I was talking to a person from the University and they told me that they had observed that in the last two, three years, the curve had reversed in favor of Science majors.”

In this sense, he affirms, “I don’t know if we are to blame or not, or if it is a general movement. I think both Ciudad Real
As in other cities in Spain, Science has understood that it had to go out, that it had to be taught because if not, it is true that scientists and Science were identified as something serious, monotonous, very boring».

«The movements for the dissemination of Science in all cities, including Ciudad Real, are generating this change in trend, curiosity is arousing. In the end, Science is the only thing that makes human nature respond
to that need for curiosity, to know why things happen and that is very attractive ».

20 tents and dozens of experiments for all audiences

In total, 20 tents have been installed along the central promenade of the Gasset, where numerous experiments and workshops have been organized that hundreds of residents have been able to enjoy, such as: ‘Get to know the birds of the Gasset’, ‘How much do you know about the human body’, in which questions will be raised such as which is the largest organ in the human body, the muscle that moves the most times a day or how many different smells we can differentiate.

Likewise, the Geovol Research Group has given a workshop on volcanoes from Geography and has exhibited the exhibition ‘Geography under the volcano: the UCLM on La Palma’, with material on the four scientific research campaigns that it has carried out on the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on the island of La Palma, the first three in the months of September, November and December 2021 and the last one at the end of January, May and June 2022.
