Marcelino García Toral, without a team after passing through Athletic, will be the new coach of Olympique de Marseille, replacing Igor Tudor, according to the French press, which explains this choice above all because of the proximity of the Spanish coach to the president of the club. Pablo Longoría.

The RMC Sport radio station affirms this Wednesday that Marcelino García Toral has reached an agreement last night with Olympique de Marseille and that only a few details remain to be finalized, information also confirmed by France Info and later by L’Equipe. According to RMC Sport, Marcelino is going to sign for two seasons.

Several media, such as L’Équipe, had already advanced in recent days that the former Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal coach was the favorite over other names that sounded, such as the still head of the PSG bench, Christophe Galtier or the Argentinian Marcelo Gallardo.

The main reason for the decision, for which the official announcement is still awaited, is the friendship between Marcelino García Toral and Pablo Longoria, since they met at Valencia, where the current leader of Olympique de Marseille was the sports director and Marcelino I was on the bench.

The 57-year-old Spanish coach had no club since he left Bilbao in the summer of 2022 and, if confirmed, Marseille would be his first experience outside his country.

Marcelino García Toral began his coaching career in 1997 with Loyalty, in 2006 he got Recreativo de Huelva promoted to the First Division and three years later he did the same with Real Zaragoza.

He was twice in charge of the Racing de Santander bench and in his first spell qualified him for the UEFA Cup for the first time.

After a brief stint at Sevilla, he managed Villarreal for more than three and a half years, and then three seasons at Valencia and two at Athletic Bilbao.
