In relation to the news of the submarine that has been lost when trying to visit the sunken remains of the Titanic, phrases such as “They disappeared aboard a submarine that was used to visit the ruins of the Titanic”, “The submarine was heading to the ruins of the Titanic” or “The objective of the tourist submarine was to reach the ruins of the Titanic”.
As indicated by the Dictionary of the Spanish language, rest means ‘part of a whole’while ruinsused and plural, refers specifically to the remains of a building: «They will not be able to avoid the vision of the ruins of the hotel». Therefore, it is inappropriate to use ruins when what is referred to is not a building, but another type of construction, as in the case of ships and submarines.
Another option possible, and perhaps more accurate, es small, used for sunken fragments of boats, as recalled by the Royal Spanish Academy on his Twitter account (“The director used mini-submarines to film the wrecks of the Titanic”), or to the sunken ship or shipwrecked (“They found a Byzantine wreck full of treasures”), according to the Small illustrated Larousse. Thus, the singular and the plural are justifiable, depending on whether one is talking about the submerged ship or its remains.
For all these reasons, in the examples at the beginning it would have been preferable to write “They disappeared aboard a submarine that was used to visit the wrecks of the Titanic”, “The submarine was heading for the wreck of the Titanic” and “The objective of the tourist submarine was reach the wreck of the Titanic.
