“This important exhibition enriches the tourist offer of the city of Rome and underlines a significant connection between the world of ancient Rome and the world of ancient Egypt, with loans from relevant museums”. This was underlined by the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, at the end of the tour of the exhibition on Nero entitled ‘The Beloved of Isis’, inaugurated with the cutting of the ribbon by the government official in front of the entrance to the Domus Aurea on Colle Oppio, in front of the Colosseum, which will be open to the public from tomorrow to January 14 next year.

“The word culture comes from the verb ‘colere’, to indicate the cult of the gods – recalls Sangiuliano – and the cult of the deities is a very important interpretative key for making a historical analysis of the various eras that have followed one another. This exhibition is a interesting initiatives that are having a resounding success with the public for the Colosseum Archaeological Park: it is a further piece of the important work that the director Alfonsina Russo is doing and that we are sharing and supporting as Mic”.

In particular, continues the Minister of Culture, “the exhibition, bringing together dozens of precious finds related to Egyptian culture from the major Italian museums, has the merit of enhancing even more an extraordinary site, which never ceases to offer discoveries also thanks to the constant investigation and restoration activities carried out by the technicians of the Colosseum Archaeological Park”.

“The idea for the exhibition stems from the recent restoration works which have revealed the presence of an Egyptianizing decoration, with subjects linked to the cult of Isis, in the Great Cryptoporticus of the Domus Aurea – the curators explain – an environment which therefore becomes an integral part of the exhibition and a tool to explore, through works, the aspects, events and protagonists of the diffusion of the idea of Egypt in the collective imagination of the Romans of the first century after Christ”.

The very title of the exhibition, in the expression ‘beloved of Isis’, recalls the definition used by Nero in the name of enthronement witnessed in the temple of Dendera, in Egypt; here the emperor, as well as Autokrator Neron, is in fact called King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Lord of the Two Lands, Sovereign of Sovereigns, chosen by Ptah, loved by Isis. The expression underlines the emperor’s special bond with the goddess.”

“This exhibition – comments Alfonsina Russo director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park – above all wants to underline the commitment of the Park towards its public, placed at the center of all programs and activities: that of returning some rooms of the building to their former glory Neronian through the careful and accurate restoration of the precious painted walls and with renewed and engaging cultural projects”.
