Chairman of the “Belarusian Social-Democratic Society” party, businessman and ex-candidate for the presidency in the 2020 elections Sergey Cherachen told Narodna Volya that he is ready to nominate his candidacy in the next presidential elections as well.
“Personally, I have the desire and strength to nominate my candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections. My team and I spent a lot of time and effort to represent the interests of our voters on the political field, said Cherachen.
Cherachan said that he is ready to participate in the elections to the House of Representatives, which are expected next year, and in the presidential elections in 2025:
“We stayed to work in Belarus, therefore, regardless of whether we will have a legal basis to nominate candidates or we will go through a general collection of signatures, in any case we will participate in the political life of the country.”
He said that “Belarusian Social Democratic Society” submitted documents for re-registration of the party to the Ministry of Justice in early June.
“But they submitted it in an abbreviated form – without a name list of party members. We understand that it is a big risk for people if their personal data ends up in the hands of the authorities. In addition, when we wrote a letter to the Ministry of Justice, we were asked to give us the opportunity to increase our regional structures to 43, which is provided for by the new Law on Parties and Public Organizations. At the moment, we cannot support this parameter from the new legal norm. But they undertook to correct the situation within a year,” the politician said.
According to the opposition and the international community, the 2020 presidential elections were rigged in favor of Alexander Lukashenko, after which a campaign of mass repressions began, affecting thousands of people, including leaders of opposition parties, human rights activists, and election observers. Thousands of people went through courts and prisons, about 1,500 people currently have the status of political prisoners, tens of thousands of Belarusians emigrated, hundreds of public organizations were closed.
