Copernicus puts Europe in the lead in Earth observation

Predicting climate and natural disasters was a bold but successful gamble.

Announced in Italy on the shores of Lake Maggiore 25 years ago, “the Baveno Manifesto” launched the European Earth Observation and Monitoring Programme. This constituted the first written page of the project which would become Copernicus. The first satellite in the Sentinel (1-A) constellation will be launched in April 2014.

This European bet is a great success. With seven large satellites in operation, compared to two for the American Landsat program, Copernicus is the most ambitious Earth observation program. The Old Continent thus provides data to the whole world (free and with open access) for climate forecasts, meteorology or natural disasters, among others.
