Will the biggest pasta consumers in the world go without their favorite dish? Consumer associations are calling on Italians not to buy pasta in supermarkets from June 22 to 29 because of its price.

Like the French, the Italians are bearing the brunt of inflation with an increase of 12% for food products and 20% for pasta. Indeed, Italian families of four spend an average of 7,690 euros per year compared to 6,775 previously, according to the Assoutenti consumer association.

A decision which follows the government’s decision not to intervene in the price of foodstuffs, unlike the French government which introduced a “tariff shield” or even an “anti-inflation quarter” to fight against the increase in prices .

“The price of pasta is absolutely disproportionate to production costs”, indicates Furio Truzzi, the president of Assoutenti, in remarks relayed by Euronews. Indeed, the price of this foodstuff, which is inseparable from Italy, could have fallen following the fall in the price of wheat, but that is not the case. The price of wheat has indeed fallen by almost half since the end of 2021.

This is why consumer associations denounce abuse by distributors and stores and try to lower prices. “The macaroni strike aims to see if keeping pasta on the shelves will lower prices, in the great Anglo-Saxon tradition of boycotting goods,” says Furio Truzzi.

For their part, industrialists defend themselves by explaining that the price of wheat is not the only factor which influences the price of pasta, but that there is also energy, packaging or transport which have increase.
