Activists started organizing marches along traffic arteries in Prague on March 1 and they have organized 17 of them so farmostly on the highway. They demand a general reduction of the maximum permitted speed in the metropolis to 30 kilometers per hourwhich representatives of the Prague management rejected, saying that they are not opposed to speed limits in the case of residential areas.

Activist actions take place on the basis of the right of assembly guaranteed by the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. According to its earlier statements, the Prague municipality can ban the announced event only in a limited number of casesfor example, if it overlaps with another previously announced gathering at the same location or the announced purpose of the gathering incites violence or racial segregation.

Legislative initiative

One of the proponents, Martin Sedeke (ODS), previously stated at a meeting of the transport committee of representatives that, according to his information, there are two legal opinions on whether it is possible to make the aforementioned adjustment. The aim of the resolution proposed and not approved today was to instruct the council to have the analysis processed and, in the event that it confirms the possibility of such a measure, to propose it as a legislative initiative of the capital to the House of Representatives.

“Unfortunately thanks to the left-wing orientation of the Pirates and Prague Self today we lost a vote that was supposed to resolve the situation regarding the blocking of backbone roads and prevent such a situation as happened today, which confirms that the current situation can lead to a threat to the health and lives of the citizens of Prague,” said ČTK Sedeke, referring to incident from Tuesday’s Last Generation CZ march, where, according to the published video, he ran over activists into several participants, the driver of the car and several meters pushed them forward.

The Last Generation movement organized a public march with the demand to reduce the speed limit in Prague to 30 km/h and draw attention to climate collapse. March 8, 2023, Prague.
