Women with asthma are at risk of worsening asthma control during pregnancy. This happens to more than 30 percent of this group of women. They need good (preconceptual) counseling and they must receive unambiguous advice about the safe use of medication. According to the Federation of Medical Specialists, the new guideline, drawn up on the initiative of the Dutch Association of Physicians for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis (NVALT), helps asthma and pregnancy to provide women with the right care, FMS reports.

The new guideline can be used by healthcare providers for women who want to have children, are pregnant and are breastfeeding. It is a multidisciplinary guideline that monitors the continuity of care and ensures that the advice is unambiguous. For example, the guideline also contains information about new medicines for the treatment of more severe forms of asthma. There is also a lot of attention for health before conception.
