Jumbo will abandon the sponsorship of the cycling team, which is therefore looking for someone to replace the supermarket chain. In the list of candidates, according to Wielerflits, appears NEOM City, an ambitious architectural project financed by public funds from Saudi Arabia that has shown a strong interest in cycling.
Basically, the project consists of building cities and resorts along the Red Sea coast in an area that is almost as big as Belgium, for example. This innovation is part of the country’s long-term plan to find alternative economic pathways that reduce dependence on oil, and in fact, it is designed to be ecologically friendly: no roads, no carbon, solar and wind power.
This conception of purity, according to the investors, fits with cycling and with the vacancy that opened up in one of the best teams in the world, it is the ideal opportunity to boost the image of the project.
Richard Plugge, manager of the structure, denied knowing such interest, although he also did not ignore the possibility that there have already been contacts with agencies that they contracted to find a new sponsor.
A Dutch economist, Stijn Janssen, explained that NEOM has the yearning to become one of the most important epicenters of the sport. For instance, they are the assigned venue for the Asian Winter Games in 2029.
This is supported by the strong commitment that the country has made with sport: hiring popular footballers for their local league, long-term sponsorships with Formula 1, together with one of the circuits that constitute the test or the realization of a race. cycling (Saudi Tour) and sponsorship of one of the WorldTour teams (Jayco).
