At a time when French prisons are overcrowded, Emmanuel Macron wants to send a message. On the occasion of his three-day visit scheduled for Marseille next week, the President of the Republic will visit one of the construction sites of the Baumettes prison under construction, according to information from Provence which we are able to confirm.

Monday, which will launch the Head of State’s visit to Marseille, will be devoted to security. He will first meet officers of the judicial police, while the settling of scores still causes so many victims. As of June 13, there were 23 homicides linked to drug trafficking in the year 2023, in Marseille.

73,080 prisoners in France, a record

After having exchanged with the police, Emmanuel Macron will therefore visit the prison extension site, a symbol of insalubrity and prison overcrowding in France. Provence specifies that the Head of State will go precisely to the site of “Baumettes 3” where 743 places must be delivered by 2025.

He will end his day dedicated to security with a visit to several working-class districts, particularly to the east and north of the city. Tuesday and Wednesday, Emmanuel Macron will devote his trips to the education and health sectors.

On April 1, French prisons had 60,899 operational places. With 73,080 prisoners, the overall prison density is 120% against 117.1% a year ago and 118.7% on March 1. A record in the history of the country.
