A big setback in public opinion about the organization of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In September 2021, 76% of respondents felt that “it was a good thing”. Last March, the figure had fallen to 69% favorable opinions. It has again recorded a sharp decline as indicated by an Odoxa poll (carried out among a sample of 1,005 people aged 18 or over) for Le Figaro. French support fell to 58%, a decline of 11 points over three months and 18 points over 18 months.

Several factors can explain this fall, such as the controversy around the ticket office, in particular the costs deemed too high to acquire the precious sesame. “A rise in concern and a feeling of unpreparedness in the population one year from the ordeals”, advances Odoxa.

The date of the survey is also to be taken into account. It was indeed carried out on June 21 and 22, just a few hours after the searches of the headquarters of Solideo, the delivery company for Olympic Games books, and of the Paris 2024 organizing committee as part of investigations into facts suspected, among other things, of unlawful taking of interest or favouritism.

Only 52% of French people want to follow the Paris 2024 Olympics

The other indicators are also down. 62% of French people, a drop of 9% compared to April 2016, think that the event will contribute to the influence of France in the world. Also 62% (-5%) believe that it will generate jobs.

If 70% of French people think that the opening ceremony planned on the Seine will be a success, and 65% count on a smooth running of the events, 64% are worried about safety, 66% for transport and 71% for the limitation of the environmental impact of the Olympic Games.

The popular enthusiasm around these Olympics is also down. Only 52% of French respondents said they wanted to follow them. This is 3 month points compared to a year before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and 12 points less than before those in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
