On the occasion of the first anniversary of the decision of the United States Supreme Court to annul the judgment of the causes Roe against WadeTarah Demant, National Director of Programs at Amnesty International USA, said:

“One year after the Supreme Court made a shameful decision to disenfranchise millions of people, women, girls, and others who might become pregnant in the United States face an unprecedented human rights crisis.”

“A mosaic of devastating laws stretches across the country. One in three women and girls of reproductive age live in states where abortion is now totally or nearly totally inaccessible. Vast healthcare deserts exist, forcing thousands of miles to be traveled to obtain abortion services, and fear is being deliberately spread to prevent women, girls, and others at risk of becoming pregnant from accessing a legal abortion.

“Women, girls, and others who may become pregnant face a harsh reality in states where they do not have access to abortion: States with the strictest abortion laws have the worst rates of support for motherhood and the highest rates. high maternal mortality and child poverty. And anti-abortion groups continue to criminalize abortion with more bans, reward systems for reporting those who seek abortion services, barriers to accessing abortion medication, and restrictions on abortion information.”

“But despite the coordinated and virulent attacks on our rights, the vast majority of US citizens continue to support access to safe and legal abortion, multiple states have added new protections and there are activists in every state who continue to stand up for your rights. Abortion is a human right and basic health care, and activists across the country and around the world are more determined than ever to secure this right throughout the United States.”

Erika Guevara-Rosas, Director of Amnesty International for the Americas, said the following:

“The overturning of the Roe v. Wade judgment a year ago was a dangerous setback in the context of continued global advancement of abortion rights. Last year, the United States joined a very small group of countries that have restricted the right to abortion in recent years, such as Poland, Nicaragua and El Salvador.. Meanwhile, progress to decriminalize and legalize abortion in places like Ireland, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia has been a tremendous achievement for the global community. It is clear that the United States is moving in the wrong direction, setting a terrible example for the entire world and, in the process, endangering women, girls, and others who might be pregnant.”
