MADRID, 24 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication has announced fines of between 20,000 and 200,000 dirhams (between 1,800 and 18,000 euros) for those who spread false news.

Article 72 of the regulation provides for these fines for “those who publish, retransmit or disseminate false news that is not true and that affects public order or causes panic among the population,” according to the Moroccan news portal Hespress.

The Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mehdi Bensaid, explained in Parliament that journalists and other people who spread misleading information could be prosecuted in this way.

In addition, Article 447.2 establishes fines of up to 20,000 dirhams (1,800 euros) and imprisonment of between one and three years for anyone who disseminates the words or images of another person without their consent or who disseminates false information with the intention of violating their privacy or defaming them. .

To comply with this rule, the Ministry will improve its surveillance capacity and the dissemination of official information to the media. It will also have technological tools to monitor and analyze the content published in the media and Internet portals.

“The Ministry is going to launch a national program for media education to foster critical thinking and disseminate verification tests among the people,” Bensaid said.

Along these lines, the Moroccan National Radio and Television Society will have a unit dedicated to verification tests of information published on social networks and news portals.

In addition, the Higher Institute of Information and Communication will organize news confirmation workshops and combat misinformation in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
