DIG/ The accounting firm Ernst and Young and the firm carrying out socio-economic studies Mays Mouissi Consulting presented the results of a study on on the contribution of the timber industry to the national economy.

The said study, carried out on the instructions of the Minister of Water and Forests, the Sea, the Environment, in charge of the Climate Plan and the Land Allocation Plan, Prof. Lee White, aims to measure the impact of the said sector on the economic, fiscal and social level from 2018 to 2022.

The timber sector is now structured mainly around three (3) types of companies: loggers, wood processing industries operating within the perimeter of a special economic zone (SEZ), and wood processing industries operating outside the SEZ.

Economically, between 2014 and 2022, the turnover of logging increased by 231% from 28 billion FCFA to 93 billion FCFA.

The turnover of the forestry industry increased by 455 billion FCFA (+292%) to reach 611 billion FCFA in 2022.

The strongest increase in turnover is achieved in the veneer segment, which grew by 525% between 2014 and 2022.

Veneer production passed from 197,189 m3 in 2010 to 589,181 m3 in 2022 (+191%).

Between 2018 and 2022, the production of wood processing plants (UTB) installed in the ZES of Nkok increased from 135,710 m3 (about 35% of national veneer production) to 360,775 m3 (61% of national production). This represents an increase of 166% in 5 years.

In 2022, Gabon has risen to the 6th rank in the world of veneer sheet producing countries and 1st in Africa.

From a tax point of view, taxable and customs revenue from the timber sector has evolved. In 2022 Gabonese taxes and customs covered a total amount of 36,884 million against 12 million 798 thousand FCFA in 2018. On the social level, the number of jobs in the wood sector increased by 49% between 2010 and 2022.

The dynamics of employment in the wood sector is driven by the forestry industry, the number of jobs for which has increased by 117%, from 4,095 jobs in 2010 to 8,884 jobs in 2022.

In conclusion, from 2018 and 2022 the wood sector has strongly contributed to the improvement of the Gabonese economy.
