Canada this Saturday opened an investigation into the implosion of the submersible Titan, whose disappearance near the wreckage of the Titanic, with five men on board, triggered an international search and rescue operation.

“Our responsibility is to find out what happened and why, and also what needs to change to reduce the chances that cases of this type will happen again”, said the president of the Transport Safety Board (TSB), Kathy Fox.

“We know everyone wants answers, especially families and the public,” said Kathy in St. Louis. John’s, Newfoundland. The investigation can last from 18 months to two years.

TSB usually investigates air, rail, sea and pipeline accidents in order to increase transport safety. It does not determine blame or civil or criminal liability.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating whether any laws were violated in the sequence of events that led to the adventurers’ deaths. Investigators must determine “whether a full investigation by the RCMP is warranted,” explained Newfoundland and Labrador Province Superintendent Kent Osmond.
