The project “Odysseus’ quest” now adorns the wall of an apartment building adjacent to the Igoumenitsa Town Hall, placing Igoumenitsa on the world map of the largest public art community Street Art Cities (
The project was designed by the distinguished visual artist Leonidas Giannakopoulos and is a visual reference that combines the natural landscape of the Municipality of Igoumenitsa and the myth of the long-suffering and resourceful Odysseus. The composition of the work represents the spirit of the legendary hero, emerging from the water lily flower of the Kalodiki marsh, carrying the oar that symbolizes, according to the myth, his arrival in Thesprotida. At the same time, it underlines the central idea of the Homeric epic, which is man’s eternal search for the promised land, as a way of thinking and will through the journey.
“Public art has the power to transform parts of the urban fabric and cultivate a sense of aesthetics, aiming at the same time to raise awareness among people and to shape the cultural becoming of the city. For this reason, we implemented this specific artistic intervention, which gives beauty to our urban landscape and highlights our cultural identity”, states, among other things, in his statement the mayor of Igoumenitsa Ioannis Lolos.
Thanks are also expressed to the photographer Giorgos Malamidis for his voluntary contribution to photographing and videotaping the mural.
