The Netflix streaming platform is preparing its own version of “The Three-Body Problem”, the first volume of Liu Cixin’s trilogy.
High-budget sci-fi is a rising value on streaming platforms. All of them are concentrating great efforts on giving life to true ecosystems of the genre that are capable of transcending due to the high quality of their production values and the creative teams behind them.
In a few words: a good science-fiction series has the ability to greatly increase users’ esteem for its container. If Apple TV+ is currently in the lead with Foundation y SiloSkyShowtime has its share guaranteed with Star Trek, Disney+ with Star WarsPrime Video The Peripheral and HBO Max, after ignoring Westworldprepara Dune: The Sisterhood.
It is obvious that Sci-fi lovers live a sweet moment, to put it simply. So it’s no surprise that Netflix is looking for its next big hit with one of the most iconic literary trilogies: “The Three-Body Problem.”
This is the first volume of the trilogy of Liu Cixin published in 2006 under the title “The memory of the Earth’s past”. After being translated from Chinese to English in 2014, it was awarded the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Novel.
On September 1, 2020, it was announced that Netflix had obtained the rights to the trilogy and ordered a series based on it, with David Benioff, D.B. Weiss (the showrunners of Game of Throneswhich were transferred to the platform for 200 million dollars) and Alexander Woo (showrunner of season 2 of The Terror) as writers and executive producers.
Of course, a Chinese production has been ahead of them: while this adaptation will land on the platform in January 2024the Chinese production did the same in January of this year, reaping very good reviews, by the way.
What will we see in the series? How a signal sent into space is picked up by trisolarans, a technologically advanced civilization that plans to find a new home. The conflict is served… and the reading plans for those who have not sink their teeth into “The problem of the three bodies”, too.
