DECRYPTION – Osteoarthritis, often associated with aging, is now the third disease associated with disability after diabetes and dementia.
The World Congress organized by the International Society for Osteoarthritis Research (oarsi.org) was held at the end of March in Denver, USA. The opportunity for more than 700 experts from around the world to present the most recent advances in the pathophysiology of this disease, its diagnosis and its current and future treatments.
Osteoarthritis is a progressive, degenerative and inflammatory disease of the joints which affects more than 240 million people worldwide. It is associated with increased mortality and a number of comorbidities, with pain leading to depression, functional disability and sick leave. This debilitating disease weighs heavily not only on patients, with a reduction in their quality of life and independence, but also on national health systems and public finances with the socio-economic costs of the pathology.
