Fatty liver, also known as steatosis, is a condition in which abnormal amounts of fat accumulate in the liver cells. A certain amount of fat in the liver is normal, but if more than 50 percent of the liver cells affected, it can affect the normal functioning of the liver.

There are three stages of fatty liver:

Stage 1: A pure fatty liver without an inflammatory reaction.

Stage 2: A fatty liver with an inflammatory response, also known as steatohepatitis. This develops on average in every second person affected.

Stage 3: Cirrhosis of the liver, also known as fatty cirrhosis. This stage affects about ten percent of cases.
