Catholic Church: The Sacred Heart Parish of Akpakpa celebrates 65 years

What you should know : From 1958 to 2023, the Sacré-Coeur parish in Akpakpa has existed for exactly 65 years. The inaugural mass marking the celebration of its creation was celebrated this Sunday under the presidency of the Archbishop of Cotonou, Mgr Roger Houngbédji, president of the Episcopal Conference of Benin. This Mass was concelebrated by several priests in the presence of Bishop Victor Agbanou, the faithful, nuns and guests. Several events marked this day of commemoration of the diamond wedding of the said colorful Church. It was also an opportunity to give thanks to God for the faith which is growing stronger and growing within this Catholic community as well as for the construction of their Church which began 5 years ago. The Assembly congratulated and thanked Mgr Victor Agbanou, Bishop Emeritus of Lokossa and outgoing President of the Episcopal Conference for the service rendered to the community and prayed for Mgr Roger Houngbédji, who currently succeeds him.

Between the lines : In his homily, Bishop Roger Houngbédji emphasized three aspects, namely trust, patience and authentic faith. Based on the liturgical texts of this Sunday, he reminded the parishioners that they have the obligation to listen correctly to the calls of the Lord and to become collaborators with Christ. By way of illustration, the prophet Jeremiah of whom the first reading spoke, he explains, is a model. A model to be followed by Christians because he keeps faith in God despite all the adversity of which he is a victim. He wished that Christians have solidarity among themselves and that they make good decisions in the gospel of the day. What he develops will enable them to be witnesses of Christ. The celebrant father praised the merits of the collaborators including SMA fathers, catechists, choristers and all those who animate this pastoral life. “It must be recognized in the Sacred Heart parish that the grace of God is spread in abundance by multitude. The pioneers of this parish responded favorably to the call of the Lord and bequeathed to us the heritage of the faith. By celebrating this anniversary today, we are called to listen in the same way to the calls of the Lord to be authentic witnesses of Christ”, he declared. Furthermore, the Bishop deplored that Christians take the sacraments of initiation and disappear.
