The Yaqui Indians of Sonora, Mexico, have had to live without drinking water because dams built in the area diverted the course of the main river in the area.

Global warming has made this region of northwestern Mexico one of the hottest on the planet.

Ciudad Obregón, in the state of Sonora (northwestern Mexico), recorded a record temperature of 50 degrees Celsius on Wednesday (06.21.2023), according to the National Meteorological Service station, and with that record it was ranked among the most hot on the planet.

“In the Yaqui Valley area, very close to rural communities and the urban area, at kilometer 68 of the Canal Alto, 50 degrees Celsius were recorded. So, officially in Sonora that temperature was reached and in the next few days it could happen again,” said meteorologist Gilberto Lagarda.

The specialist from the Northwest Basin agency of the National Water Commission (Conagua) warned that the official weather forecast indicates that temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius or more will continue for the rest of this week in the municipality of Cajeme and surrounding municipalities. .

Meanwhile, he said, “the highest temperature in an urban region was in Ciudad Obregón with 49 degrees Celsius, which was a record for a date and month of June in all of history.”

Lagarda explained that these extreme temperatures are due to an anticyclonic circulation that is affecting almost the entire Mexican territory, but particularly in the southern region of Sonora.

The last time that the Conagua weather stations recorded temperatures of 49 degrees Celsius in Ciudad Obregón was on July 27, 2020.

So far this season in Sonora, three people have officially died as a result of dehydration or heat stroke, all adults, residents of the cities of Caborca, Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregón, all in Sonora.
