In a fraction of minutes, the Ford Fiesta owned by small business owner Lucas Fernando Costa Pereira, 28, went from a vehicle valued at R$25,000 to scrap metal costing R$450.00. He watched the flames completely consume the car this Monday afternoon (26), after an electrical failure in the engine that caused a fire. The incident happened on Avenida Afonso Pena, near Rua Dr. Arthur George.

The episode, in addition to causing the total loss of the car, also damaged another vehicle, a Fiat Mobi, which was parked nearby. That’s because, with the fire, the handbrake cable melted and released the car. He hit the Mobi, which soon started to catch fire in the rear. No one was injured as there was no driver or passenger at the time.

Security cameras recorded the height of the fire and the material damage left to Lucas. This Tuesday (27), less terrified, but equally sad, the businessman told the report that the incident directly impacts on family income, as he uses the vehicle for work.

“I own a gutter company, I’ve been working with it for 10 years, but I’ve owned it for 4. My car is a 2014 model, I had it for 3 years and had no insurance. It was a car he used to work, trips to clients’ homes”, he comments.

The man was returning from Terrenos, a municipality 32 kilometers from Campo Grande, when the car started to have problems. “Suddenly, the engine started to catch fire. It came out of nowhere, there was no time to react, it was too hot, I just managed to get my stuff out of work, tool. And I couldn’t even take it all off. I have another car, but it’s too old, you can’t take the road, it stops in the middle of the street”.

According to Lucas, the car never had any problems. He remembers that he was desperate to see the flames reaching the other parked vehicle. “Both cars are uninsured. I panicked at the loss. At the time, a driver stopped to help with the fire extinguisher. Later, some policemen arrived, passing by at the time. To film several appeared. I understand that everyone’s life is hectic”.

To prevent the car from continuing to descend, PM (Military Police) agents managed to break the driver’s window and pull the handbrake further, stopping about 3 meters from the point of collision. The fear was that the vehicle would continue downhill and could hit another car or run over someone.

Destiny – Due to the condition of the car after the fire, there was nothing left for Lucas to do but sell the vehicle shell to the junkyard. A few days ago, he had made a budget and the Fiesta was valued at R$ 25,000, after what happened the car was sold for R$ 600. However, Lucas still had to pay the tow truck, that is, R$ 150 less than the value of sales. In the end, the businessman watched the car become scrap metal for R$450.

Now, Lucas is fighting to get more customers to help pay for the repair of the other damaged vehicle.
