In an atmosphere of the end of the championship, teachers, directors, students and mayors filled the Arquiteto Rubens Gil de Camillo Convention Center, in Parque dos Poderes, this Wednesday (28).

With each name of the school announced, the celebration of a team of education professionals exploded with the result of the program “MS Alfabetiza – Todos pela Alfabetização da Criança”.

This was the first year of awarding cash prizes that encourage public schools. The action of the state government had 800 participating schools, from 79 cities.

The trophy, the plaque and the amount of R$ 80,000 delivered to the top 30 were celebrated as an Oscar of education. In all, R$ 3.6 million were awarded for children’s literacy and best teaching practices.

“The cash value is the least. The most important thing is the commitment to walk towards the permanent improvement of education and to make a difference in teaching. We will continue investing”, said Governor Eduardo Riedel (PSDB).

Each winning school will have autonomy to invest the money, as needed. For the Secretary of State for Education, Hélio Daher, the program goes beyond the 30 winners.

“Everyone is in the crosshairs. It’s important to look at the schools that could be helped and who didn’t make the cut. In this way, the entire state grows, ”she explained.

In order to make teaching equal, with all students compatible with age and level of education, the resource was divided. Of the total, R$ 2.4 million were allocated to awards for “Outstanding Schools” and another R$ 1.2 million for “Supported Schools”. The amount will be forwarded to city halls for direct transfer to selected schools.

The first place was the Gabriel Laureano Municipal Indigenous School, located in Nioaque. The mayor, Valdir Couto Junior (PSDB), stated that the program is here to stay. “Of the six schools in my city, three participated and two were classified, one indigenous and the other from settlement”, he celebrated.

The first installment of the Outstanding School award, in the amount of R$ 80,000, corresponding to 75% of the total value (R$ 60,000) is already available for school units.

The second installment, with the remaining amount, will be paid in the year following the payment of the first installment and will be conditioned to the maintenance or improvement of the results presented in the previous year.

The director of the Rosalvo da Rocha Rodrigues Municipal School, Maria Sonilva Lima Azevedo, was happy with the 21st fight. “It is an enormous satisfaction to win for the performance of the school’s professionals. We didn’t know it was all that amount. We entered to participate and we were happy to receive the award”, says she who runs a unit that teaches children from farms and settlements in Nova Alvorada do Sul.

Another 30 units selected as “Supported Schools” will receive R$ 40,000 each, to improve the results measured through the SAEMS (Basic Education Evaluation System of Mato Grosso do Sul) and measured by the IDAMS (Learning Development Index of Mato Grosso do Sul).

Criteria – Literacy results first take class size into account. Classes for the 2nd year of elementary school must have at least 15 students regularly enrolled. The other criteria refer to the results of the IDAMS (best grade) and SAEMS (at least 90% student participation) assessments.

In order to meet the axis of continuing education of pre-II teachers of early childhood education and teachers of the 1st and 2nd years of elementary school, the program has scholarship holders who monitor the actions and the training process. For the year 2023, there are 331 scholarship holders designated to act as municipal coordinators and trainers.

Among the partners are entities such as the Lemann Foundation, Instituto Natura, Bem Comum, Partnership for Literacy in Collaboration Regime (PARC), Assomasul, Undime and Fadeb-MS (Fundação de Apoio e Desenvolvimento à Educação Básica de Mato Grosso do Sul) .

Another axis of the program is the supply of complementary didactic material, which has already started to be delivered to the municipal departments of Education. The Coletânea MS Alfabetiza is available to students in the 1st and 2nd years of elementary school, in addition to the teacher’s book for the regents of the respective classes.

Indigenous Literacy – In May of this year, the State Government announced that it will produce didactic materials for literacy and literacy among indigenous children in the Guarani, Kaiowá, Kadiwéu and Terena languages. With 80,000 indigenous people, Mato Grosso do Sul has the second largest community in Brazil.

The linguistic adequacy of didactic material for the four indigenous languages is part of the “Alfabetiza MS Indígena”, a branch of the MS Alfabetiza program. The work is a recognition of the indigenous language and culture, and will help preserve the customs of the original peoples.

The forecast is that from the school year 2024, literacy material will be available in the respective mother tongues for children in the 1st and 2nd year of elementary school, who study in indigenous school units (including in urban villages).
