Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: The National Electricity Company in Jordan reported that next August will be the date for the completion of the first phases of the electrical connection with Iraq.

The director of the National Electric Power Company in Jordan, Amjad Al-Rawashdeh, said about the electrical interconnection with Iraq, that the interconnection project is proceeding as planned, as the first phase on the Jordanian side ends next August, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.

And the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced the introduction of the electrical connection with Jordan into service, starting from the beginning of next July, with a capacity of 50 megawatts as a first stage.

The two sides laid the foundation stone for the project in October 2022, and the project aims in its first phase to supply Iraq with 150 megawatts, to rise to 500 megawatts in the second phase, and 900 megawatts in the third.

The connection with Jordan was supposed to start working from the beginning of June, but due to some weather conditions and some things related to the Jordanian side, it was postponed.

Early last year, the governments of Iraq and Saudi Arabia concluded a memorandum of understanding for electrical interconnection between the two countries, in an effort by Baghdad to reduce the chronic energy shortage in the country.

Iraq produces between 19 and 21 thousand megawatts of electric power, while the actual need exceeds 30 thousand, which leads to frequent power outages amid protest from the population.

Baghdad is seeking to diversify the sources of importing electricity, after it relied on Iran alone during the past years by importing 1,200 megawatts, in addition to gas fuel to feed the local electric power stations.

The electrical connection between Iraq and the Gulf countries has the potential to contribute to addressing the energy crisis, but its effectiveness depends on several factors, as the electrical connection allows the transfer of electricity from the Gulf countries known for their large energy resources to Iraq. This could help increase Iraq’s energy supply and ease pressure on the local energy infrastructure.

Iraq relies heavily on its domestic energy production, particularly in the form of oil and gas. The electrical interconnection with the Gulf countries provides access to alternative energy sources, such as solar energy or wind energy, which can contribute to diversifying the energy mix in Iraq. This diversification can enhance energy security and resilience.

By linking up with the Gulf states, Iraq can benefit from a more robust and interconnected electricity grid. This connection can improve network stability and reliability, reducing the frequency of power outages and outages. A stable supply of electricity is essential for economic development, attracting investment and improving living conditions.

Establishing a reliable electrical connection requires infrastructure development, including transmission lines, substations and interconnection facilities. Overcoming these infrastructure challenges can be time consuming and capital intensive.

Coordinating the exchange of electricity between different countries involves dealing with political agreements, regulatory frameworks, and logistical arrangements. Resolving these complexities requires multi-stakeholder collaboration and coordination.
