Omikron part explodes in Switzerland

by time news

Omikron has replaced Delta as the dominant variant in Switzerland. Within a week, the omicron part literally exploded.

the essentials in brief

  • The FOPH reported high numbers of new infections again over the festive period.
  • What is particularly noticeable, however, is that Delta has now also replaced Omikron in Switzerland.
  • Within ten days, the proportion of the new variant shot up to over 55 percent.

After the key figures on the coronavirus in Switzerland last week gave reason for hope, the values published today from the holidays are sobering: on Monday the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) reported 36,261 newly infected people within four days.

The positivity rate is thus 17 percent. What is striking about it: Omikron has displaced the dominant variant Delta within a very short time from practically nothing.

On a 7-day average from December 17th Omikron suddenly accounts for over 55 percent of all new corona infections. The scenario outlined by the BAG and the task force has therefore occurred. Due to this development, today’s share is likely to be much higher.

A look at the graphic shows a veritable explosion of Omikron cases since mid-December. At the same time, the delta share drops from 99 percent of all cases to around 43 percent. However, the FOPH warns: The proportion is probably a bit overestimated because the Omikron variant is currently being actively searched for via sequencing.
