To Kremlin declined today to answer questions about General Sergei Surovykin, who is known as the “Armageddon general” for his tactics in the war in Syria and is the deputy commander of Russian forces in Ukraine.

Surovikin’s whereabouts are unknown after her brief mutiny Wagner on Saturday when he appeared in a video appealing to the mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin to stop the rebellion.

In that video he looked exhausted and it was not clear if he was speaking under threat. Unconfirmed reports have since circulated that he is being questioned by the security services.

Asked if Surovikin still enjoys the trust of Russian President Putin, Peskov replied that Putin as the head of the Russian armed forces works with the defense minister and the chief of the general staff and therefore said that this question concerns the Ministry of Defense in which so far has not made any statement.

Questions about “structural units within the ministry,” Peskov said, should be submitted to the Defense Ministry.

In particular, also asked by journalists if the Kremlin can clarify the situation in relation to Surovikin, Peskov replied: “No, unfortunately not. I suggest you contact the Ministry of Defense, it is their responsibility.”

Regarding the fate of Prigozhin, Peskov replied that he has no information about the whereabouts of the Wagner leader.

It is noted that General Sergei Surovikin is also known by the nickname “General of Armageddon” in the Russian press for his aggressive tactics in Syria. Surovikin is also the deputy commander of the forces deployed in Ukraine.

A New York Times report, based on a US intelligence brief, said on Tuesday that Surovikin knew in advance of Prigozhin’s plans and that Russian authorities were investigating his possible involvement in them.

However, the Kremlin has rejected what is mentioned in the publication, saying that there have been and will be a lot of speculation and gossip.
