The government has decided to expand free dengue fever testing for travelers from Southeast Asia.

The reason is the increasing number of dengue fever cases in the current year, especially among travelers who have visited the Southeast Asian region.

The Agency for Disease Control and Prevention announced it would offer free testing for travelers from Southeast Asia at 13 airports and ports in the country from July to November.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease. Symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and rash appear after infection.

Around five percent of cases can develop into severe dengue infections. In about 20 percent of severe cases, the disease can be fatal if not treated appropriately.

So far this year, 55 dengue fever cases have been reported in South Korea. This corresponds to 5.5 times the level of ten cases in the same period of the previous year.
