The rivers of the Yanomami Indigenous Land in Roraima exhibit a change of color after almost five months of the federal government’s operation against illegal mining in the region.

Satellite images show how the waters of rivers like the Uraricoera are darker compared to the clayey brown that prevailed earlier in the year.

The lighter coloration is caused by mining activity, which drills into the bottom of the rivers and leaves the water cloudy.

Illegal mining of minerals also contaminates waters with mercury used to facilitate the separation of gold from the soil.

General Costa Neves, of the Military Command of the Amazon, explains that the containment of illegal mining activity is an achievement so that the conditions of indigenous lands return to normal.

“Our intelligence will produce data that will help agencies plan their activities and their missions to ensure the preservation of the environment.”
