While urban violence erupted everywhere in Ile-de-France and in the suburbs of large French cities after the death of young Nahel on Tuesday, the municipalities are trying to react. In addition to a strong police presence for three evenings, some cities have opted for the establishment of a curfew, in order to deter and facilitate the work of the police.

The municipality of Clamart was the first to introduce a curfew between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Thursday evening to Monday morning. During the night of Wednesday to Thursday, a tram train was set on fire in this wealthy and rather quiet suburban town. In Neuilly-sur-Marne, where seven municipal police vehicles were destroyed by the flames, Mayor Zartoshte Bakhtiari (SE) decided to put in place a partial curfew in three districts of the city: the Fauvettes, the Primroses and the town hall sector.

The town hall of Compiègne, in the Oise, also imposed a curfew on Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. until Monday morning for minors under the age of 16 unaccompanied by a parent or legal representative. The curfew measure follows a series of violence in the priority district of Clos-des-roses, where according to the town hall, “a lot of mortar fire” targeted police and firefighters during the night, while trash cans and vehicles were set on fire. The LR mayor of the city, Philippe Marini, has already imposed night curfews for minors in the past, in particular for the Fête de la Musique in 2022.

A lawyer announced that he had introduced an interim release against the Clamart curfew order, “totally disproportionate” in his eyes, to the administrative court of Cergy-Pontoise. “The period of unrest leads to inappropriate reactions that collectively punish citizens. The security response is not the response to social malaise, ”said this lawyer, Me Vincent Brengarth.
