Tragic Accident on Polish Ferry: Mother and Child Rescued from Baltic Sea
Karlskrona, Sweden – In a harrowing incident that unfolded on the Baltic Sea, a seven-year-old child fell overboard from the Polish ferry Stena Spirit, prompting the child’s mother to jump in after the child. The incident occurred during the vessel’s journey from Poland to Karlskrona.
The identities of the deceased have been confirmed as Polish citizens, whose names have not been released pending notification of their families. Despite extensive efforts to gather information about the accident, authorities have been unable to locate any witnesses onboard who saw the incident unfold.
Authorities have urged passengers and crew to come forward with any information they may have. “If you have not yet spoken to the police, we would like you to contact us on 11414,” emphasized Jimmy Modin, the police press informer.
Following an intensive rescue operation, both the child and the mother were eventually found. The Maritime and Air Rescue Center (JRCC) reported that the individuals were not responsive when they were located. Prompt action by rescue teams resulted in the victims being winched out of the water by helicopters.
“It was a race against time. The woman was immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation using a defibrillator,” shared pilot Anders Olsson, who was aboard the Swedish Maritime Administration’s rescue helicopter during the mission. Olsson added, “She was treated with it all the way to the hospital.”
The woman’s condition remains critical, and she continues to receive medical attention. The child’s condition has not been disclosed at this time.
As investigations into the tragic incident continue, authorities are working to determine the cause of the incident and whether any safety protocols were breached. Stena Line, the operator of the ferry, expressed their deep condolences to the affected families and pledged their cooperation in the ongoing investigation.
