Title: Chronic Constipation Increases Risk of Bowel Collapse, Doctors Caution

Date: June 30, 2023

In a recent statement, Dr. Natthaphong Wongwiwat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, highlighted the importance of observing symptoms related to chronic constipation due to the risk of bowel collapse. Chronic constipation is defined as a condition where difficult or infrequent bowel movements occur along with abnormally hard or dry stools for a period of more than 3 months.

Dr. Wongwiwat revealed that constipation is a common condition worldwide, affecting up to 25 percent of individuals in Thailand. It predominantly affects people between the ages of 20 and 40, with females experiencing it more frequently than males. Those who are dehydrated, lack high fiber foods in their diet, lead a sedentary lifestyle, or are emotionally stressed are at an increased risk of developing chronic constipation.

Dr. Jinda Rojanamathin, Director of Rajavithi Hospital, further explained that the causes of constipation can be categorized into two main groups. The first group, referred to as “primary constipation,” is caused by abnormal squeezing and relaxing of the intestines, often associated with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome. The second group, known as “secondary constipation,” is caused by structural abnormalities of the bowel or systemic diseases such as colon cancer, brain disease, endocrine diseases, or medication side effects. However, the majority of chronic constipation cases are caused by primary factors.

Dr. Kitti Chuenyong, a medical specialist in internal medicine at Rajavithi Hospital, highlighted that while constipation caused by primary factors is generally considered safe and easily manageable, the primary concern lies in cases where chronic constipation is a symptom of an underlying disease. If not diagnosed in a timely manner, it can lead to serious conditions such as colon cancer. Therefore, it is crucial to seek medical advice if constipation is accompanied by symptoms such as passing bloody stools, severe abdominal pain, persistent exhaustion, or problems starting after the age of 50.

To prevent and manage chronic constipation, individuals are advised to adopt healthy habits. This includes drinking an adequate amount of water (at least 2-3 liters per day) to avoid dehydration, consuming a high-fiber diet consisting of vegetables and fruits, regular exercise to support bowel movement, and engaging in stress-relieving activities.

In conclusion, chronic constipation can have severe consequences if left untreated. People experiencing chronic constipation should carefully monitor their symptoms and consult a doctor if any warning signs are observed. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can prevent further complications and ensure a healthy digestive system.]
