Madurai: In a recent development, the Madurai High Court has granted permission for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) public meeting to be held in Karur tomorrow. The court’s decision came after the Karur Corporation Commissioner initially approved the permission, only to suddenly revoke it subsequently.

Following the sudden cancellation, Karur district BJP executive Karthikeyan filed a petition in the Madurai branch of the Madras High Court. The plea requested the court to not only lift the ban on the BJP public meeting at Karur Tiruvalluvar Sports Ground but also order the Karur Corporation Commissioner to grant permission for the event.

During the hearing today, the Madurai High Court made some significant observations, highlighting the importance of preserving the right to freedom of speech and expression in the country. The court expressed concern over attempts made by ruling parties to prevent opposition members from addressing the public, paralleled by the opposition adopting similar practices once they come into power.

The court emphasized that every individual should be allowed to express their opinions without hindrance and stated the need to refrain from blocking the right to freedom of speech. It further stressed that public meetings should not be canceled without appropriate justification.

In response, the lawyer representing the Karur Municipal Corporation argued that only sports competitions were permitted at the Karur Tiruvalluvar ground, asserting that political gatherings were not allowed.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Madurai High Court granted permission for the BJP’s general meeting scheduled for tomorrow. The court’s decision not only ensures the party’s right to organize the public meeting but also reinforces the importance of freedom of speech and expression in a democracy.

The BJP’s public meeting will be held at Thiruvalluvar Sports Ground in Karur, inviting members and supporters to share their views and opinions openly. The event is expected to provide a platform for political discourse and foster a democratic atmosphere in the region.

With the court’s decision, the BJP and other political parties are hopeful that their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression will be protected, contributing to a thriving democratic society where all voices are heard.
