The version of the ballet Cinderella signed by the great Rudolf Nureyev is set in the Hollywood universe of the 1930s. July 4 in the Teatro Grande of the ancient Roman baths. The Thirties desired by Nureyev thus ideally approach the Fifties of the Dolce vita directed by Lorenzo Mariani’s Traviata, also on the program of this year’s Caracalla Festival. Created in 1986 for the Paris Opéra, this reinterpretation in a modern key of one of the most popular fairy tales, with music by Sergej Prokof’ev, is proposed for the first time by the Capitoline Theater Ballet.

Throughout its history, Cinderella has undergone various adaptations and Nureyev enjoyed transporting the plot to the Hollywood universe of the 1930s: discovered by a film producer, an abused girl on the run from an alcoholic father and an odious stepmother, debuts on the big screen by winning the heart of the main actor. “At the beginning I feared that Perrault’s fairy tale would have been modified abusively – Nureyev declared – but the mechanics of the story have not changed. All of Cinderella’s drama stems from the fear of seeing her dream collapse, which here has become a cinematic dream A dream of a white dress, slightly tinged with pink to pay homage to innocence, and a touch of glitter because Cinderella is a character in today’s world, she only dreams of one thing: to become a star”.

Sergej Prokofiev’s music is entrusted to the baton of the young conductor Alessandro Cadario, in his debut with the Capitoline Lirico orchestra. It will be up to Rebecca Bianchi to revive Cinderella’s emotions and dreams on stage. Michele Satriano will be her prince, while Alessio Rezza will be the film producer. The two stepsisters Alessandra Amato and Susanna Salvi will take dance lessons from the master Claudio Cocino. Also on stage are the Students of the Dance School of the Rome Opera House. The staging of the Opéra national de Paris is designed by Petrika Ionesco for the sets and Hanae Mori for the costumes. The lights are curated by Jean-Michel Désiré, the videos by Igor Renzetti and Lorenzo Bruno. In Nureyev’s three-act version, taken up by Aleth Francillon, Gillian Whittingham and Benjamin Pech under the supervision of Eleonora Abbagnato, Prokofiev’s score is kept in its entirety. “The music – stated the musician – introduces the character of Cinderella through three themes: the first of which depicts a humiliated Cinderella, the second a dreamy Cinderella, the third, a broad theme, Cinderella in love and happy. Patiously composed between 1940 and 1944, the ballet was staged at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow on November 21, 1945 with choreography by Rostislav Zakharov and libretto by Nikolai Volkov.

After the premiere on Saturday 1 July, the show will be repeated on Sunday 2 and Tuesday 4. All performances will start at 21. The show replaces the planned Strictly Gershwin, which cannot be staged due to health problems of choreographer Derek Deane .
