The Cross The Weekly: What makes you get up in the morning ?
Emanuel Hubert: What drives me are the discoveries I make through my work: whatever the place or the situation, I always meet someone interesting. This does not prevent that there are mornings when it is difficult to get up. In certain delicate situations, I was able to fear certain appointments, certain people. It’s part of everyday life, for an entrepreneur as for anyone else.
At work, how is it going?
E. H. : Our team is going through a transitional year with the accession to the highest level of professional cycling, the “World Tour”, a season of learning at the very highest level. Runners must assimilate the pressure of “all up there”. However, to my chagrin, sports matters only represent 20% of my time in a day. What falls to me is to make the structure live, to be in perpetual search for external contributions to improve performance, dietetics…
Very concretely, this means canvassing, meeting and convincing technical partners, but also financial ones. Since I joined the team in 2010, everything has been multiplied by ten, whether on a structural, administrative or financial level. Despite everything, I always try to instil this family spirit, to preserve this territorial anchoring, a Breton soul. Compared to many other groups, we have kept this DNA, which we display and claim!
Who do you trust?
E. H. : I can count on the people around me at work, but especially on those close to me. In our environment, we can very quickly go from 50 phone calls a day to just one. You have to keep your feet on the ground. Sport can tend to intoxicate some people, simply because it offers exceptional encounters, such as a President of the Republic or great business leaders. It is a gateway to places where, from a social or intellectual point of view, there would have been little chance that I would find myself.
You have to take advantage of these encounters, but never forget that real life is in the evening when you watch a good movie with the family, or on weekends when you have friends over for a barbecue. And above all, you have to be yourself, not play a role. One day, you will also have to know how to say “stop”, I will not continue until I am 65 or 70 years old. When the time is right, I’ll be happy to pass the baton and enjoy my family. I would like to hand over the team to someone I trust, someone who deserves it and who has the same philosophy as me.
Something that would change your life right now?
E. H. : My ultimate dream is to create a real training center for the youngest. The idea would be to support them quietly, while allowing them to study and settle here permanently. With the aim of transmitting to them the love of our jersey and the desire to stay with us for a long time.
For the moment, we can’t do it because we have sponsorship contracts for two or three years, and it’s a project that amounts to more than ten. To start, I will create a development format within the World Tour team, a second team at the lower level, to develop talented riders.
A tenth Round opens for the men’s team this Saturday July 1st, what are your objectives?
E. H. : We have no choice but to be opportunistic. Luck favors the brave ! In some stages, the team will be in a position to win, thanks to Warren Barguil or Clément Champoussin… Going for the final victory in the general classification is a bit out of reach for us: the guys are not going to fight to get a 15th place.
I prefer that my riders bet everything on two or three stages, as adventurers. The general classification will become more of a goal in the years to come, especially with the young Kevin Vauquelin, but there is still a long way to go. You have to keep a cool head.
And for tomorrow, an idea to change the world?
E. H. : If I answer by caricaturing myself, human bullshit should be eliminated… What concerns me a lot is the lack of respect vis-à-vis men and women. On the political level, it shocks me enormously that we are able to speak badly to the President of the Republic. And it all starts at school. My sister-in-law is a teacher at the end of her career, in a college without problems: yet she has seen this evolution in the behavior of students in forty years of career.

At 52, Emmanuel Hubert gave access to the Arkéa-Samsic cycling team, which he has been leading since 2014, in the first world division, the “World Tour”. For the tenth year in a row, eight boys will show the red and black colors of the Breton team on the roads of the Tour de France, from July 1 to 23, in search of a stage victory that they did not have. not picked up yet. Then it will be up to the girls, whose team was created in 2020, to take over for their second Round.
But for this little world to pedal, it takes a company with 100 employees and a boss to make the right choices. A job that looks like a priesthood – 220 hotel nights a year, far from Corsica where his family lives – which does not prevent this former cyclist from getting back on a bike himself regularly.
