DISPATCH — After a third night of riots linked to the death of Nahel, the government today announced a series of exceptional measures: deployment of armored police, cancellation of parties and concerts, stopping of buses and trams after 9 p.m. The world is watching.
According to AFP, there were 875 arrests overnight from Thursday to Friday, 492 buildings targeted by rioters, 2,000 vehicles burned and dozens of stores looted, especially in the heart of Paris. On the networks, the videos are legion and show the chaos that certain cities now shelter. Even schools were targeted.
For Emmanuel Macron, It’s the fault of “video games” who “intoxicated” the young people, the vast majority in the riots. He also called “all parents to responsibility”.
Thursday June 29, the rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, Chems-Eddine Hafiz, underlined a “strong emotion” while calling for calm: “If the incomprehension, the pain and the anger are legitimate following such a tragedy, the Great Mosque of Paris calls on young people in particular not to react with violence”.
Exceptional measures
In order to stop the cycle of violence and destruction, several special units (BRI, RAID, GIGN) have been deployed since Thursday evening, as well as 40,000 police and gendarmerie personnel. This evening, the new Centaur tanks of the gendarmerie will join the group.
At the same time, the government has decided to cancel major events, such as the concert Mylène Farmer was to give at the Stade de France this evening.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has asked prefects to stop buses and trams throughout France after 9:00 p.m. until further notice.
After curfews in Clamart and Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine) in particular, Marseille banned demonstrations on Friday, as did the prefecture of Hérault.
Finally, the school parties of the Academy of Versailles in particular have all been canceled.
